Nirmala Institute of Education, Panaji, in collaboration with the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP), organised an awareness session on "Waste Management and Home Composting" for the First-Year B.Ed. students on 24th July 2026. The programme aimed to promote environmental responsibility and sustainable living among future teachers.

The programme commenced with a brief welcome and introduction by the B.Ed. trainees, followed by the introduction of the resource persons representing the CCP.

The first session was conducted by Ms. Afrin Nawaz, who introduced the concept of waste management and highlighted its significance in maintaining a clean and healthy environment. She emphasized the increasing need to adopt environmentally responsible practices in everyday life and encouraged students to become active participants in promoting sustainability.

The second session was delivered by Ms. Bindiya Kholkar, who explained the four-bin waste segregation system. She demonstrated the correct method of segregating different categories of waste and explained how proper segregation facilitates recycling, reduces pollution, and conserves natural resources.

The third session was presented by Ms. Aarushi Doshi, who spoke on home composting and its benefits. She explained the concept of composting, differentiated compostable and non-compostable waste, and discussed the environmental advantages of converting biodegradable waste into nutrient-rich compost. A student volunteer participated in a live demonstration, where the process of preparing compost in a bucket and the correct layering of waste materials were clearly demonstrated, providing the participants with practical knowledge that could be implemented at home.

The final session was conducted by Ms. Nikita Ghorpade, who addressed the importance of conserving water and electricity. She highlighted the interdependence of these resources, the consequences of their wastage, and practical measures that individuals can adopt to reduce consumption and promote sustainable living.

The programme concluded with an interactive session, during which the Principal Dr. Russell D’Souza encouraged students to share their key learnings and appreciated the efforts of the CCP resource team for conducting an informative and engaging programme.

The session ended with a vote of thanks delivered by the B.Ed. trainees, expressing gratitude to the Principal, the resource persons, faculty members, and all those who contributed to the successful conduct of the programme.
