Goy Asmitai Dis, commemorating the historic 1967 Opinion Poll in Goa, was celebrated at Nirmala Institute of Education on 14 January 2026. As part of the celebration, Dr. Russell D’Souza, Principal of Nirmala Institute of Education, addressed the gathering, followed by an insightful session by the renowned speaker and historian, Mr. Sanjeev V. Sardesai.
Mr. Sardesai spoke in detail about the series of events that unfolded before and after Goa’s liberation, which ultimately led to the Opinion Poll. He highlighted the invaluable contributions of prominent personalities such as Purushottam Kakodkar, Shabu Desai and several other freedom fighters who played a crucial role in preserving Goa’s unique identity. His narration helped students understand the political, social, and emotional significance of this landmark event in Goan history.
With his excellent storytelling skills, Mr. Sardesai presented the topic in a highly engaging and interactive manner, resulting in maximum student participation. The session was further enriched with short quizzes and rewards, which kept the audience attentive and enthusiastic throughout. Students actively responded to questions and shared their thoughts, making the session lively and meaningful.
The session proved to be both informative and inspiring, instilling a sense of pride and awareness among the students about Goa’s rich heritage and democratic legacy. In addition, A Kalshi Fugdi dance was performed by F.Y.B.Ed. & S.Y.B.Ed. students under the guidance of Ms. Gautami Khandeparkar (Asst. Prof. of Performing Arts) which added cultural vibrancy and charm to the programme.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks given by Ms.Danisha Rodrigues (F.Y.B.Ed. student), expressing sincere gratitude to Mr. Sardesai for his enlightening talk and to the organizers for successfully conducting a memorable, meaningful, and educational event.
