AWARENESS SESSION' ON ‘BAN ON SINGLE USE PLASTIC’ & PAPER / CLOTH BAG CAMPAIGN
The NIE Swachhata Abhiyan Cell initiated an AWARENESS SESSION ON ‘BAN ON SINGLE USE PLASTIC’ & PAPER / CLOTH BAG CAMPAIGN in campus the on 29/09/ 2023.
Keeping in sync with the importance of Gandhian thoughts about cleanliness. The purpose of the campaign is to instill in each of us a sense of duty and obligation towards safeguarding nature, as teacher trainees, it is our moral responsibility to inculcate in our students habits that will sustain the well being of self and one’s surrounding.
The session created an awareness among the trainees about the BAN ON SINGLE USE PLASTIC. A brief presentation and a video by the NIE-SAC coordinator Mr. Raymond Pereira, highlighted the ill effects of single use plastics on human beings and nature. The session also mentioned the laws and penalties issued by the government of India. The core essence of Re-use, Upcycling and Alternatives were also discussed. The trainees were asked to create awareness in their surrounding and promote use of eco-friendly alternatives.
From July 1, 2022, the government of India banned single-use plastic items that have low utility but are frequently littered around, such as plastic straws. The aim of the ban is to curb plastic pollution, since single-use plastic harms terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. India's ban on single-use plastic items includes straws, cutlery, ear buds, packaging films, plastic sticks for balloons, candy and ice-cream, and cigarette packets, among other products.
The session is a precursor to the Gandhi Jayanti Celebrations call given by the Prime Minister of our country for "Shramdaan - one hour of voluntary labor, for cleanliness on 1st October 2023,beginning at 10am.
The trainees were given a demo on how to make a paper and cloth bag upcycling an old newspapers and a t-shirt. Trainees Eden Baretto and Valusha Fernandes facilitated the demonstrations, wherein the students did their own stitch-less cloth bag.
