In the presence of the Manager, Sr. Olga Vaz , Director, Sr. Sunitha Cruz , Principal, Dr. Russel D’Souza, Former Director Dr. Sr. Rita Paes , Former Principal Dr. Sr. Delia Antao, faculty members, non-teaching staff, Sisters from the D.H.M. community and F.Y. The programme began with a Prayer Service led by Sr. Flenciya, seeking God’s blessings and guidance for the celebration. This was followed by the Flag Hoisting Ceremony, one of the most significant moments of the programme. The hoisting of the Tricolour reminded everyone of the courage and sacrifices of the freedom fighters and of the responsibility that comes with the freedom we enjoy today.
A major highlight of the celebration was the street play presented by the teacher trainees. The performance went beyond entertainment and encouraged the audience to stop, think and reflect on important issues affecting the society. It conveyed the central message that freedom comes with responsibility and that every citizen has duties towards the nation. The issues portrayed included cleanliness and the responsibility towards a cleaner India, the responsible use of social media, exam paper leak and the dangers of spreading fake news with the freedom over social media.
The street play was followed by an inspiring address by the Principal, Dr. Russel D’Souza. He spoke about the significance of Independence and the responsibilities that accompany freedom. He also emphasised the importance of the National Pledge, encouraging everyone to understand the meaning behind the words of the pledge and to translate those values into their everyday actions. His message highlighted that national values such as unity, respect, responsibility and commitment to the nation should not remain mere words, but should be reflected in the conduct of every responsible citizen.
Another significant theme that the Principal Dr. Russel D’Souza stressed on was India’s vast linguistic diversity. India is home to numerous regional languages and dialects, which makes the country culturally and linguistically rich. This diversity reminds us that India’s strength lies in its ability to bring together people of different languages, cultures and backgrounds while remaining united as one nation.
The programme then continued with a patriotic song 'Teri Mitti' sung by the F.Y. teacher trainees. The melodious performance created an atmosphere of pride and patriotism.
The celebration concluded with a Vote of Thanks delivered by Abigail, expressing gratitude to everyone who contributed to the successful conduct of the programme. The concluding message once again reinforced that freedom is not merely something inherited from the past; it is something that must be valued, protected and used responsibly.
Overall, the 80th Independence Day celebration was a meaningful and thought-provoking programme that went beyond simply commemorating India’s Independence. It created awareness about our duties as citizens, national values, unity, social responsibility, cleanliness, responsible use of social media, the consequences of fake news, and respect for India’s linguistic and cultural diversity. The celebration conveyed a powerful message: Freedom comes with responsibility, and the future of India begins with each one of us.
Jai Hind! Jai Bharat! Vande Mataram!
