Session on Consumer Rights

IQAC and Consumer Welfare Cell (CWC) of Nirmala Institute Of Education, Altinho, Panaji, Goa organized a Session on Consumer Rights on 8 February, 2024 in the Institute auditorium. The session started at 3.15 p.m. Miss Queenela Gomes introduced the resource person for the day Mr. Roland Martins, a social activist and a Coordinator of GOACAN. He has set up consumer forums in different villages of the State. He has recently initiated the Young Civic and Consumer Movement (YCM) to promote civic & consumer rights on the campus. He started the session with a powerful statement ‘The youth today knows to read and write but they don't know to read about their rights’

He highlighted  that many consumers are unaware of their rights, leading to exploitation by unscrupulous businesses, deceptive advertisements and unsafe products which pose risks to consumer health and safety. He provided an in-depth analysis of consumer rights, including their significance, current challenges faced by us in our daily lives, and recommendations for improvement. Throughout the session he gave relevant examples of the challenges faced by us. He threw light on various laws and regulations that have been enacted to protect consumer rights, including consumer protection acts, product liability laws, and fair trade practices. Additionally, regulatory bodies such as consumer affairs departments and other consumer protection agencies. He ended the session by empowering the young consumers to make informed decisions, seek recourse for faulty products or services, and hold businesses accountable for their actions. The session was interactive and engaging. Miss Sanvy Baretto proposed the vote of thanks and the session ended at 4: 35 p.m.
